For years, Canada has been talking about an epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women. There are a number of activist organizations, has been a Federal Government inquiry and report, and various corporations have recently jumped on board to support. There's even an extensive wiki page.

This is the first article that focuses on men and boys, and it's well overdue.

In 2020, there were 201 Indigenous victims of homicide nationwide — 81 per cent of which were men. An Indigenous man is about four times as likely to be a victim of homicide when compared to an Indigenous woman and seven times as likely as a non-Indigenous male.

This number is higher than in previous years as the number of Indigenous men who died by homicide reached its highest in 2020 since 2014. From 2014 to 2019, they were about three times as likely to die by homicide as Indigenous women.

But Sharphead-Arcand says Indigenous men and boys rarely get the same attention and sympathy from the public, or in how they’re portrayed in the media.

At first I wondered if this was the usual rotten spin of 'it's not in-line with the general population', except that the gender disparity may actually be bigger in the indigenous American population.

According to this wikipedia article, the proportions of homicide victims that are male are 69.8% in Canada and 77.8% in the US; compare this to the 81% figure stated in the article. Note that this data is from 2013 (article states their figure is from 2020), so it may not be a reliable comparison, but it's all further evidence exhibiting the unmitigated contempt that the mainstream media holds for men.
