Hi!! Girl whose boyfriend has been in Europe for two years here.

He started his masters in the EU the same year I started my second year of undergrad, fall 2020. We started dating at our four-year school, where we met, in February 2020, and we lived together for a little while. We usually get to see each other about three times a year, and we commit to video calling for one hour a day, even if we're just chatting a tiny bit while doing computer work or chores.

He ended up taking two years to finish his terminal masters, and now he works a full time job in that same country. It's turning out to be extremely difficult for him to get a job in my country again, due to the mass firings of tech people, so I'm moving in with him this summer! I'm so grateful that he is enthusiastic about supporting me if I have trouble getting a job. Luckily, most EU countries let basically anyone work if they speak English and aren't a criminal.

Note that the plan was NEVER for me to move to Europe. We started dating despite his relocation plan with the condition that he would return, but crazy global circumstances are currently preventing that. We have spent hours discussing how to securely move me over there, since I originally never wanted to.

The best advice I can give is to be flexible and fearless. If money is a concern, you can travel on off-seasons. I live in the American Midwest, and a ticket to Western Europe in a non-touristy month can be as low as $400 USD if I get a plane with transfers.

I remember you saying that he talked about wanting to marry you. That mutual commitment to a clear-cut future goal for the relationship will be what gets you through this. Are you a couple who will stop at nothing to make your dream a reality?

Full text: My bf and I are both in university. He is graduating this year but I still have one more year to go before I graduate. For graduate school, my boyfriend is looking at year-long masters programs in Europe. He really wants to study there and I want to support his dreams.

However, I cannot come along since I will still be in school, and I get really bad anxiety when we’re apart. I also have always had the dream to travel and live abroad but due to certain circumstances I do not know if I will ever get that chance so there is an aspect of jealousy as well.

I am not sure what to do and am wondering if anyone has found themselves in a similar position. My boyfriend and I love each other very much and I believe we would be able to survive a LDR, but I am still struggling a lot with the anxiety I have about it. It’s making me a bit snippy with him when he talks about going abroad and he doesn’t deserve that. I want to support him but it’s hard.

Any advice would be welcome.
