Slavery is ok when we do it.

[–]yeetus1feetus 60 points61 points62 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Even tho its "based on true events" the female tribe got completely decimated. Its a sad pathetic attempt at displaying what actually happened lol. But yea woohoo go girls

And they were fighting a war to continue enslaving other African tribes, but who cares about that when we can twist the narrative to say what we want?

The Woman King is the perfect representation of pop feminism. Completely inaccurate to the point of reversing sides and ignoring the fact that this "empowered" group of women were the biggest proponents of the African transatlantic slave trade and the movie not only ignores that, but tries to spin it as them being strong empowered independent woman. Typical garbage feminist mindset, in reality these people were slavers and also got their asses kicked on the battlefield, and the feminist mental gymnastics spins this yarn of a movie that ignores their participation in the slave trade and pretends like they're a bunch of liberated strong independent woman when they were not strong, independent, and they were the antithesis of liberation to the people they enslaved.

The only scenes of slavery in the film are when the main character gets kidnapped by the “evil bad run by man tribe” , they break free and let the other captured slaves go while fighting their way out.

I watched it thinking, aren’t the ones in cages literally the ones they caught and sold to this tribe in the first place

no its a thing in some kingdoms. The regent is a king, so when it is a queen regent, the Queen is king.

I'm not seeing the PPD here. They made a feminist movie about empowered black women, and this author calls the all black female casting "magnificent" and that the portrayal of their society was "commendable".

He is supporting the idea of empowering women by portraying them as warriors, I don't know about the rest of you but that's not the message that needs to be injected into the culture right now.

[–]NanoA33 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I think he means historial fallacy because if I remember correctly the original story ended in absolute failure. But I’m not completely sure.

Correct, the French eventually got tired of their shit and when their (male) line infantry faced those fierce and powerful (lul) warrior ladies, they got butchered. From Wikipedia:

First Franco-Dahomean war:

The Mino participated in one major battle: Cotonou, where thousands of Dahomeans (including many Mino) charged the French lines and engaged the defenders in hand-to-hand combat. The Mino were decisively crushed, with several hundred Dahomey troops being gunned down. Reportedly, 129 Dahomey fighters were killed in melee combat within the French lines.

Second Franco-Dahomean war:

Against a military unit with decidedly superior weaponry and a longer bayonet, however, the Dahomey Mino could not prevail.[11] During a battle with French soldiers at Adegon on October 6, 1892, during the second war, the bulk of the Mino corps were wiped out in a matter of hours in hand-to-hand combat after the French engaged them with a bayonet charge.[16] The Dahomey lost 86 regulars and 417 Dahomey Mino, with nearly all of those deaths being inflicted by bayonets; the French lost six soldiers.

So they weren't even skilled with melee weapons either, huh? That's how that reads to me. Not just that they were overwhelmed by musket fire

[–]That_Squidward_feel 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They were a complete waste of a military unit.

The only reason they even started allowing women in was because the Dahomey people frequently raided their neighbouring tribes for slaves they could then sell on the coast - and they didn't have the manpower to replace the casualties.

[–]DJ_Die 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If anything, they're were even more of a disadvantage in melee because men are on average stronger and have more endurance, especially against well-trained professional soldiers.

The PPD is everyone recognises what an absolute shit show this movie is.

[–]EternallyGhost 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

94% Flicks, 94% Rotten Tomatoes, 76% Google Users.

Don't kid yourself, we're in the minority here.

[–]Even_Relative5402 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah nnnnnnaaaaaaaaa, it was a flop https://cravingcinema.com/was-the-woman-king-a-box-office-flop/

[–]EternallyGhost -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah nnnnnnaaaaaaaaa

Making a box office of $94m on a $50m budget is not the same thing as "everyone recognises what an absolute shit show this movie is". You're being a straight up idiot now.

[–]Sirhugh66 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A movie which is supposed to be based on historical facts, but tells a story completely at odds with what actually happened, and failed to make a profit to boot certainly is a shit show. Sorry, but random insults are not a valid rebuttal (well, outside of the school yard at least).

[–]RatDontPanic 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't come at these goons with facts. It'll only trigger them harder.

Feels >>> facts, folks!

[–]HumaDracobane -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well, being far those women were warriors in they society. That is a fact. Whatever happens in the movie I have 0 clue since I didnt watch the movie, I've only read about the actual historical events.

[–]Fol1owtheWhiteRabbit 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In the film they are depicted as fighting against slavery, when in reality this tribe was the most brutal enslavers in africa. The movie is a joke.

[–]HumaDracobane -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I'm saying is the historical fact, whatever happened in the movie I dont know since I didnt watch the film.

[–]whaticypudding 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What’s the difference between this and every other “based on a true story” film out there. I mean really.
