So in the episode titled "Variations Under Domestication" of the series Orphan Black, a wife knocks her husband unconscious with a golf club as he's trying to leave their house, ties him up, and proceeds to torture him including dripping hot glue on his chest with a glue gun.

The wife had her paranoid reasons (she suspected that he may be some kind of agent monitoring her), but the husband did not know about any of this. As far as he knew, she was just torturing him because he seemed to be keeping secrets of any kind (not some crazy sci-fi conspiracy kind).

At one point during his torture he demands to be freed, and a character who is a clone of his wife who he thinks is his wife (it's a sci-fi show remember) tells him to shutup and that he shouldn't speak to his wife that way (when he is tied up and just been tortured) because she is "the rock of the family". He agrees and is apologetic.

In fact, later that night in the same episode, long after he has been untied and the torture has stopped and when he is free, HE apologizes to the wife. He admits an affair he had some years before, and acts like he deserved to be knocked unconscious with a golf club, tied up, and literally tortured.

In fact, in the episode after that, when an intervention is staged for the wife, he is the one who stands up for her and again blames himself for everything, etc. etc.

I just can't see a show written where a man knocks his wife unconscious, ties her up, and then literally tortures her where the tone is light-hearted and comical, and where the wife then agrees that she deserved it and stays with him (no matter what she did wrong).

But that's exactly how the show presents it - in a humorous manner and with the husband taking the blame.

Here are a couple of reviews remarking on how "hilarious" and "funny" it was. There are plenty more I'm sure. I just don't see how someone would write a review about how funny it was if the sexes were reversed.

EDIT: It has come to my attention that in later episodes after the two I mentioned, that it is revealed that the husband is in fact her monitoring agent, but that does not excuse the humorous tone or why the reviewers thought it was so funny. Also, several of the characters on the show were aware that she tortured him and none of them actually thought he was the monitoring agent, so why didn't any of them think it was weird that he wanted to stay with her and acted like he deserved to be knocked out, tied up, and tortured? No one even batted an eye, as if well of course he still wants to be with her and thinks he deserved it. I'm not even sure that the other characters knew about the affair he admitted to, and even an affair wouldn't justify torture (especially when the wife had no idea about the affair and from his point of view had no idea what he was hiding).
