It's a slow-growing cancer, and extremely common. In most cases treatment causes more harm than good. Only if it grows quickly or causes other impairment is treatment warranted. Most old men who die--of other causes--also happen to have prostate cancer.

When the article says it's more aggressive in asians, are they assuming it's because of diet, or genetics?

To turn this into a more productive thread: what can a man do to avoid prostate cancer? I'm assuming that smoking can give you all kinds of cancer, prostate cancer included. Is this correct? What kinds of food can a man eat to avoid getting prostate cancer?

Any information on men's health is appreciated.

In the last 72h I lost my grandfather to cancer which started on his prostate.

Prostate cancer is actually inevitable given enough time. If you lived to 150~200 years you would basically have a 100% chance of developing the disease.

By way of rebuttal to u\stemgang\ comment..."It's a slow-growing cancer...", Yes, sometimes.

As evidence I present myself. 62yo male, active and fit. Not a physical problem in the world. Regular annual prostate exams (DRE) since the age of 55.

Last exam (during annual physical) showed enlargement (asymmetrical) of prostate, so PSA was ordered. The very next day I was sitting in front of a Urologist who was setting up a CT scan for the following day. My PSA was 220! In one year my PSA went from 0.4 to an astronomical 220.

Over the span of the next 3 weeks I had a CT scan, prostate biopsy (Gleason 4+3), MRI (showing cancer has metastasized to pelvis, lower spine, lymphatic system, and proximal left humerus), and finally bilateral orchidectomy this past Monday.

Prostate cancer may in fact be very common (until this last physical, I never really gave prostate cancer too much thought one way or the other <shrug>), but it is NOT ALWAYS slow-growing.

And to the far too commonly held notion that "Prostate cancer is not a fatal cancer", I say BULLSHIT!
