On the W. Kamau Bell Show, Lindy West can be seen denying the significance of the Holocaust and seen denying the significance of anti-semitism in today's culture

First, at 2:30 Lindy West retains the right to call people dicks, a gendered slur. Clearly then, she believes it's okay to call Lindy West and other feminists cunts, right?

But between 5:15 and 6:08 there is a comparison of Holocaust jokes to rape jokes, in which West explains why Rape Jokes are much worse than Holocaust Jokes (She believes it's okay to make Holocaust Jokes, and not okay to make Rape Jokes)

Here is a rough transcript, please feel free to correct it.

Lindy West: (Speaking of gang rapes and Tosh's joke) *This is a thing that happens. And it's actually really trivializing to say that mocking and exploiting a rape victim's trauma to her face because there will be women in that audience and probably men who have been sexually assaulted, is the same, as like 'making fun of a thing', like it's not the same. It's not the same, it's not the same

W. Kamau Bell: Even if that thing is Hitler?

West: What do you mean, like, hey, wouldn't it be great if someone like, reanimated Hitler,

Bell: Hey, wait a minute, let me write this down. Next week's show we will be doing that

West: and you knew ... and by the way it's not like you know that a third of your audience is Holocaust Survivors who are being like systematically silenced and told not to talk about the Holocaust and like you were kind of asking for the Holocaust, like that is not built into our culture. And so it's not just making a joke about a thing, it's contributing to a culture that perpetuates that thing.

So basically she is saying:

  • In today's society there is no anti-semitism
  • It's okay to make jokes about people who aren't present
  • Jews and Holocaust survivors are not told they should get over it, it's just a joke (think about recent discussions of reparations, arresting still living Nazis, troubles in the Middle East, ...)

Does she really believe these things?

I don't know. If she doesn't I think she needs to clarify her statements and apologize for making them.
