Misogyny Versus Misandry: Which is more widespread, and which is more harmful?

Depends on the country and time period. A lot of what feminists call "misogyny" is just a belief that there are biological differences between the sexes. Actual misogyny is -- if I had to guess -- most often caused by feminists themselves. In second place would be mothers who abuse their boys. Overall I think it's comparatively rare and always has been.

Misandry is institutionalized in the west, so it's much more widespread and harmful for our purposes. What causes misandry? Once again I would say feminism is the primary cause, followed by fathers who abuse their daughters. In third place would be female dating preferences; if they're all chasing the same guy they're going to get bitter. Male achievement probably also causes a certain amount of resentment.

How could feminism be the primary cause of both? The misandry one is obvious. But I think feminism also spreads misogyny because (a) it enables women do to awful things without punishment or even social censure, so there is no corrective on female behavior and (b) by claiming to represent women while simultaneously abusing men on a mass scale, this may cause men to think women as a whole either don't care about them or actively want to see them harmed.

I think the biggest danger is thinking any of this is a contest. it's not a zero sum game: each gender faces its stereotypes and it's challenges, and the challenges of one don't minimize the other. It's exactly the opposite, actually: they tend to exacerbate each other. The same stereotyping of women as weak which makes it harder for them to be taken seriously in the workplace is reflected in men being seen as more threatening, which causes them to get less consideration in the courts.

Misandry isn't even perceived as something real. When I asked if "other things" on "hateful subs" subreddit which explicitly called out misogyny included "misandry" fuckers couldn't even given me a straight answer.

Just look how much hate there is and still was in feminist ranks. Those who didn't hate men are outcasts (Cathy Young, Christina Sommers et al). Man hating piece of garbage called Dworkin who claimed that men having sex with women with non flacid penis is definitely raping, founder of Gender Studies, Sally Gerhard, who suggested to reduce population of men to 10%, are mainstream.

This necro shit is everywhere in all areas, notably, sex. But there were times when not all feminists were necro nazis like Dworkin:

Misogyny (I mean real hatred of women, not the bogus claims that feminists use constantly to deflect criticism) is pushed to the fringes of our society. Anyone who publicly expresses misogyny is ostracised from much of society. Certainly no one can expect to wield significant political or corporate power after outing themselves as a misogynist.

By contrast, misandry is mainstream and celebrated. Almost all media outlets are left-leaning and all of those carry regular commentary from feminists spouting the usual "men are useless", "men are violent rapists", "men are doing manhood all wrong and should take our advice to be more like women", etc etc.

Politicians spout blatant misandry because they know it will bring them votes, even politicians on the right in some cases. Laws are written based on misandry. Corporate leaders spout misandry as a PR exercise.

Our society is saturated in misandry and gynocentrism; it's so pervasive you can easily forget it's even there.

One small example that demonstrates how normalised misandry is these days: the recent NBC hit piece on Jordan Peterson included this throwaway comment, "He makes no apology for his mostly male audience...". Think about that for a second. It's just assumed that having a mostly male audience something shameful, deserving of an apology. Why? What's wrong with that? The narrator assumes that everyone listening already understands the problem with having a mostly male audience and will be horrified by the fact that Peterson has one, as well as appalled that he hasn't apologised for it.

All this in a couple of seconds of TV footage. The amount of misandry in our society is absolutely immense, orders of magnitude more than the volume of misogyny.

Harmful would be subjective to circumstance.

Both are equally widespread and both are equally harmful in their own right.

I think the bigger problem is that misandry is accepted and in some situations encouraged, while misogyny is unacceptable in majority of public rulings and claimed on even minor disagreements.

So whilst the terms themselves are on paper equally reprehensible, how they are treated in a public setting is the bigger problem needing to be addressed.

Worldwide I'd say misogyny is more common by a fairly large margin, though in modern western nations misandry is significantly more common, and frequently ignored. Misogyny is more harmful in my eyes, if only because in the regions which it is common there are fewer rules to protect women from hate-filled predators. Misandry is mostly just a nuisance, and is starting to be addressed, albeit gradually. Also, I don't think that a gradual, more careful shift toward more fair treatment is all bad, as hopefully it won't be adjusted too far this way.
