On the one hand it's nice to see Margaret Atwood decrying MeToo.

On the other I get the impression that she only cares because there's finally some blowback against rich women. Where was she when all those fathers were losing access to their kids?

Nor do I believe that women are children, incapable of agency or of making moral decisions. If they were, we're back to the 19th century, and women should not own property, have credit cards, have access to higher education, control their own reproduction or vote. There are powerful groups in North America pushing this agenda, but they are not usually considered feminists.

The reason women couldn't own credit cards is because MEN HAD TO PAY FOR WOMEN'S DEBTS. And women have always been able to own property. The richest woman in Europe during the capitalist "enclosures" was a fucking woman!

Were women ever denied the right to read books? I seriously doubt that. Throughout history, women have been at least as educated as men. The average man typically had to do a fucking job, so he didn't have time to sit around reading books. Vote? Most men couldn't vote either, not even when they were dying in war, you stupid fucking hag. And finally, "reproduction"? That's called biology. Men invented safe birth control and abortion. You're welcome. Ungrateful much?

I hate to do this, but I would be really interested in /u/girlwriteswhat opinion on this atrocity of an essay, and /u/typhoneblue while I'm at it. Let's give a shout out to the REAL "strong empowered women" in Canada.

Who?

Alt-righters, and the odd traditionalist on r/TheRedPill? Mormons? Mencius Moldbug? Very, very powerful groups indeed.

I read that as the author being on the verge of realizing that the whole patriarchy/kyriarchy thing is a sham but still being too committed to it to realize that those powerful forces are all in her head.

Feminist theory ascribes intent where there isn't any so often that it necessitates an entire shadow conspiracy in order to maintain any semblance of cohesion. The chain goes something like:

  • You wind up with these mysterious societal forces swooping in to cause problems and reinforce traditional gender roles that their theory set insists aren't biologically driven.

  • Because they are not biologically driven, these behaviors must be instilled in children and young adults.

  • In person male influences have been pruned from the lives of many modern children. This can be seen in the growing number of single parent homes with no father, the reduced male presence in education, and the almost complete absence of males from daycare work.

  • Modern children continue to exhibit these behaviors and traits, without in person male influence.

  • Feminism is a powerful force working tirelessly to oppose traditional gender norms.

  • Because there is a powerful force working to oppose traditional gender norms the failure to do so must reside in an even more powerful opposing force.

  • Individual males frequently have no provable means of being connected to such a force. Close examination fails to produce any secret patriarchy meetings or benefits.

  • Thus there is a secret shadow patriarchy working behind the scenes.

She disagrees over her presumption of innocence vs. their presumption of guilt.

Innocent until proven guilty vs. guilty until proven innocent.

Insufficient evidence to support an accusation protects the innocent and sometimes even the guilty.

An accusation alone protects no one.

Is there such a thing as a good feminist Mrs Margaret Atwood?

[–]Mythandros 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, no there is not.

Intersectional feminists deserve not even this level of recognition.

She is a bad feminist because she thinks, and stands up to the crowd for her principles.

That summons it up, mainstream feminists hate independent thinkers.

“This structure – guilty because accused – has applied in many more episodes in human history than Salem. It tends to kick in during the "Terror and Virtue" phase of revolutions – something has gone wrong, and there must be a purge, as in the French Revolution, Stalin's purges in the USSR, the Red Guard period in China, the reign of the Generals in Argentina and the early days of the Iranian Revolution. The list is long and Left and Right have both indulged. Before "Terror and Virtue" is over, a great many have fallen by the wayside. Note that I am not saying that there are no traitors or whatever the target group may be; simply that in such times, the usual rules of evidence are bypassed.”
