I wonder why so many men believe gender equality measures don't take men into account

I work in IT, a field that is overwhelmingly male. Not too long ago the company I worked for had a policy that any tech job we were hiring for, female applicants automatically got at least a phone screening. If we were not referring a female candidate for further interview after the screening, there was a form to fill out explaining why...there was no such form for rejecting male applicants.

I never saw any overt pressure to hire female applicants over males, but there was absolutely an advantage given in just getting an initial interview...hundreds of mens resumes just went in the trash for every one that got a phone screening.

I don't even believe there was any nefarious intent about it...this was the company's way of sidestepping any claims that women weren't being given opportunities, they literally weren't applying for the jobs in any significant numbers.

Well... I called it. Being male is a disadvantage.

I wonder if anyone has figures on how fucked you are if the hiring manager is female.

It gets even better.

"We should hit pause and be very cautious about introducing this as a way of improving diversity, as it can have the opposite effect," Professor Hiscox said.

This quote was in reference to the trial of gender-blind hiring by the Australian public service, which is already 59% women.

So when the professor says, in effect, "We thought this would improve diversity, but we have to stop because it's actually reducing diversity", her meaning of the term "diversity" becomes clear.

To the professor and her like-minded peers at the Australian public service, "diversity" means "as few men as possible". Increasing the number of women above 59% would be "increasing diversity", while moving towards a 50/50 gender balance is "the opposite effect".
