The majority of violence in relationships is mutual with women instigating it more often or as often as men. When abuse is non reciprocal, it's more likely to be instigated and solely perpetrated by the woman with men being the least likely to be reported as perpetrators.

How do you defend female perpetrators of domestic violence by claiming they acted in “self defence” when you wont use that line for male perpetrators too.

Nope. Assumptions of innocence or guilt based on sex are sexism. I wish that went without saying but here we are.

I had an ex punch me and grab me round the neck and start squeezing because I refused to give her sex one night.

She did not act in self defence; but, as a perpetrator.

It's an unconscious assumption that the gender most capable of violence are the ones that will practice it. The research doesn't show that.
