Ex wife and I are trying to hammer out joint custody (1 child.) I want the discretion to let him go on a vacation with approved relatives (like my parents) during my scheduled time without her permission required. US travel only and not for more than a week max. She's pushing back like crazy saying no way. She wants the right to approve any and all trips he might take with family members. Based on what I have heard from lawyers, it's a gray area that is generally left up to the parents, wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue.
