I'd like to know what people think should be done in cases like these. For my own part, I think this woman needs to be shown no leniency, and it looks like the courts are gearing up to do just that. A few points then:

Her lawyers are making a big deal about her suffering from a mental illness. I treat mental illness. Based on what's said in the article and her behavior, I would guess that this woman is suffering from depression, but also exhibiting some cluster B personality traits (tendency to over-react to negative stimuli, intense emotionality, manipulativeness, etc). These are not reasons to go easy on perpetrators IMO.
The guy thankfully only spent a week in jail. However, it was enough to destroy his family life. His wife served him divorce papers, and the question should be asked: why was his wife so quick to bail on him? There may be other factors involved here that we don't know about, but it's not an uncommon thing to hear about wives and families disavowing men accused of sex crimes, even when they're innocent. Makes me wonder if the real culprit here is societal prejudice.
Also, it should be noted that, if there hadn't been CCTV footage clearing Mr. Basic by contradicting his accuser's narrative, he would not have been released in such a timely fashion. While I understand concerns about allowing a potential rapist to go free on bail, it seems to me that accuseds should only be denied bail when there is already solid evidence to believe that the accusations are true. Imprisoning accuseds on an accusation alone, no matter the severity of the crime, seems part of the problem here. Just within the week this guy was locked up, his life was destroyed. It seems to me our justice systems need to be more cognizant of the damage jail and public accusation can do to exert extra-legal punishment upon a person accused of a heinous crime like rape, and should take measures to protect accuseds from this harm. False accusers bank on this sort of thing (often outside of the legal system entirely) by calling their targets' jobs, spreading rumors among their communities, and relying on the outrage of others to punish their targets, while leaving their own hands "clean."
We need to start coming down hard on false accusations like this, as the damage they do is great, even when there is a relatively speedy resolution. I don't think it's overreacting to say that those who can be shown to have knowingly falsely accused a person of rape should be given a minimum of six months in prison. Leniency to these horrible people just makes the cost-benefit analysis favorable to them.
