If this was something that happened to women they would insinuate guys are just gay or it is misogyny causing it.

Because women are more likely than men to experience physical and sexual threat in their daily lives, they are also more likely to judge others (usually men) to be creepy. Judgments of creepiness, however, are not necessarily reliable.

More men are assaulted than women and the sex stuff is starting to be disproven as well. The problem is women are panicy and heavily influenced by the media and societies message that they should be afraid despite violence and sexual violence being at an all time low. They also are heavily influenced by steps 1 and 2 which the article even talks about (step 1. Be attractive step 2. Don't be unattractive. )

We are finding a lot of it is less reported and we have run into issues like men by definition being unable to be raped such as the FBI barely acknowledging it due to how they defined rape and sexual assault. In addition a lot of the studies and surveys that show the womens incident rates being high are extremely flawed if not outright lies or suffering from the woozle effect.

Choice quote:

So rather than reliably detecting danger, our internal ‘spidey sense’ often signals social difference or otherness. When we judge a situation or person creepy, we participate in shunning and social ostracism. Creepiness can prevent us from responding to the odd, the new or the peculiar with curiosity, interest and generosity of spirit.

I'm astounded (in a positive way) that this article, which at one point attacks a central part of much of #MeToo discourse, is featured on Aeon.co, which is normally a relatively 'progressive' outlet (unlike say Quillette, which specializes in dunking on "PC culture"). It puts the finger on this issue in a way that I haven't been able to express, laser-focusing on implied aspects of MeToo that are underexamined rather than throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Great article. I think "creep" is a gendered slur on par with "slut" and I'm dismayed at the many orthodox feminists who embrace the term (especially those ostensibly concerned with men's issues).

I was amused at this, though:

The mentally ill and disabled, the physically deformed, those with ticks or other abnormal movements or facial features, the impoverished and the homeless are all more likely to be judged creepy

"I was just walking in the woods, honest!"

(Although tbf a tick IS literally creepy.)
