Unprovoked 'one punch' attacks are now subject to harsh penalties in Australia unless the perpetrator is a woman in which case she gets off with a small fine as usual.

I don't want to side with feminists here, but there's a time and place for everything. A graduation ceremony is a graduation ceremony, not the occasion to propose.

Imagine you're in a hotel for a date with your lady and you have planned to propose to her at the end of the meal. Just before the champagne with the ring arrives, your girl's university dean appears in a gown and gives her a diploma in an impromptu ceremony. She is ecstatic, and jumping with joy. Now wouldn't you think that the university stole your thunder and hijacked your special occasion?

You can argue that it makes her day doubly joyous, but I'm not buying it.

Ok good point. But because I have a genuine knack for being an asshole, I'll present the other argument. But first the feminist complaint:

The gesture, which was filmed and posted online to celebrate their engagement, prompted a backlash from feminists who accused him of “hijacking" her special day because he is "threatened by her intellect".

The real reason for the emotional uproar:

It's the usual childish feminist projection. It was THEIR special day that got ruined. For radical feminists, receiving their gender studies degrees is a marriage ceremony -- to the church of social justice. Like nuns. They are no different than the brides of christ taking their vows to join the sisterhood.

Mate, I love assholes who disagree with me!

threatened by her intellect

Retarded argument. If he is truly threatened he would end the relationship, not propose. Every ceremony has its own spark and I don't want it to be ruined. Also, I think the gender studies degree (current scholarship) is a gigantic scam.

Gender is a great thing to study. But there are natural forces in academia which give excess prominence to new and radical theories. As in all arts subjects extremists abound. Gender studies has some truly spectacular loonies who have gained far more power than is appropriate.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't do arts in general or gender studies in particular, just that being a respected academic is not sufficient qualification for being given power in public policy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gender is a great thing to study.

This is why there's not enough women in STEM. They believe tripe like this. STEM are great things to study... Gender is a joke subset of psychology and hardly "great."

[–]Lion_amongst_gods 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I disagree. Gender "studies" stopped studying anything. Their academic foundation is hoax and lies (which are being called out each day). Their academic output clearly favours one narrative, and within a few years, the same propaganda becomes the study material. Their successful scholars end up in the same academia (reinforcing the same rhetoric), in public office (making senseless laws), or in the industry (setting misandrist corporate practices). Yes, this is a bit of a stretch, but gender studies is far more corrupt than any other liberal arts field.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All academic fields select teachers and theorists from ex students. This causes more problems in sciences with a looser coupling between theory and measurements. The physics of non-chaotic systems above the quantum level is very well locked down, while string theories currently need nothing more than internal consistency and ability to replicate the Standard Model to be considered seriously.

Gender studies must at least be a candidate for most corrupt of the liberal arts fields, and I can't think of a worse one. Some might argue for economics or sociology, since political relevance is an extremely powerful driver of bias.

If the US government had its way climate science would be the most corrupt field of science in the entire history of the human race, including probably all of the future that hasn't happened yet. But they don't have control, so I gender studies might be it.

Yes and no, you make a fair point but it's so obvious that the reason a feminist would complain about this is pure jealousy lol. I think it's an issue for people to settle amongst themselves privately. Feminists like this halfwit just want to stir up trouble and actually turn this shit into legislation.

I mean come on, just take one look at the type of person she is, organiser of the 'women's march' she's going to be one of those anti-trump loons screeching in public about pussy grabbing unironically and saying if men disagree with her they're misogynists.

They're fucking jealous, it's no coincidence that the very people complaining about this are the exact types who you'd think of. Kind of reminds me of drone pilots and shit who get complaints made about them and it's always some fat middle class crazy mum with too much time on her hands.

[–]Lion_amongst_gods 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Again, I'm not siding with the feminist because they're feminist, nor do I support their reason. I desire the same outcome, for my own reason, which I stated above.

[–]antilopes 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Meh, most people realise it is uncool to propose during a speech at someone else's wedding. Isn't this similar?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes it is. It's a major dick move.

Honestly any public proposal is a dick move. It's essentially trying to coerce someone because to say no you have to publicly humilate them.

Not often that I side with feminist, but I have to on this.

I'd post that on their forum...if I were not banned for being a man...

But rom coms elevate those to the rank of 'you need to do this or its not romantic'.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Romcoms are incredibly fucking toxic. Nobody should look to them for life advice.

I proposed to my life on her graduation day, but I let her enjoy her ceremony and take pictures and all that. I didn't want to interfere with that. Then in the evening, when we were alone I proposed.

She says she loved it. Made her day even more special.

She's also a feminist... when she read this, she said (slightly paraphrased) "Those are just women looking for something to complain about, which is doubly frustrating because there are actual issues that impact women they could be advocating for."

Yes there are. They are largely in the developing world and feminists remain silent. :(

I wrote an article about this a while back.

Propose in private: "bride to be isn't happy because not enough effort was put into it" Propose in public: "you're basically forcing her to say yes"

Question, Why do guys have to be the ones to make the first move, and propose?

[–]rbrockway[S] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe there is a case to be made that he disrupted the ceremony but he must have had the university's approval for this and she's come out and said she's happy with what happened.

In any case, the problem I have with the feminists here is that they feel compelled to frame this (and everything else) in terms of gender, and make their outrage public.

[–]Jamie850 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This screams out jealousy.

[–]double-happiness 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dr Jana Bacevic, a research associate in sociology at the University of Cambridge, wrote on Twitter: "Imagine being a man and feeling so threatened by a woman's intellectual success that you have to force her to frame her identity/agency in relation to you on the very day she is being celebrated for her intellect.

"Oh wait, that's, like, 99.9 per cent men."

I see Dr. Bacevic admits to being "both precariously employed and only part-waged" herself. Let's hope ms. Banuskeviciute didn't major in sociology.

Feminism is Lithuanian for outrage.
