My wife was born and raised in a small town of a few thousand. We just moved from a town of about 90 thousand to a metropolitan area with over 3 million. Until now she's never really seen homeless people, at least not with the frequency we are seeing now and so prominently begging on corners. Today, for the first time we saw an older woman begging and she commented how you don't see that many around. I said "That's just the other side of the glass ceiling." She asked what I meant so I said women don't tend to hit rock bottom as hard as men. Definitely gave her a moment's pause.
