I feel like a total fool. My (23F) boyfriend (22M) was hiding for a YEAR that he thought my apologies weren't enough. I thought apologising, hearing him out, giving him space and "deeds instead of words" were enough to mend the hurt, but I was completely aloof that he also needs some reassurance (I always thought of him as the big guy who doesn't need this and he never expressed it). I feel so stupid, because I thought he was being so cranky because he is bored of me, that I'm not pretty enough or that I'm being too nice, so I thought I need to be nicer, prettier, work out more, cook better meals, clean the house better, never nag or say bad things etc./and when this didn't work I thought I need to ignore him, be a "bitch" etc. I was so busy with trying to figure out whats wrong with me, that I couldn't see the one obvious thing he was referring to.

On the one hand I feel really bad about it and I want to make it up to him as best as I can. On the other hand I think he has been unnecessarily cruel. He never dropped a hint that it's this thing bothering him and promised to himself "I won't tell her, she needs to figure it out herself", while I was killing myself to find the reason and just couldn't. If he said something, we could work it out way sooner and we both wouldn't suffer a year long.

I don't know how to approach this. I know its my fault for not catching up sooner, but I also think he was an ass for hiding it for so long. He is very hurt by my behaviour and I'm hurt too by his behaviour. How to graciously mend it back?
