There has been a lot of talk here at r/PurplePillDebate about OnlyFans. Should young men worry about an increasing number of young women turning to OnlyFans and sex work? I argue that many young men are overestimating the number of women producing explicit content on there. It's a Moral Panic. they need to relax.

So... what is my experience with OnlyFans? I've subbed to a few, but spent very little money there and no longer sub to anything. HOWEVER..... I pirate their content. Just about all of it is freely available on the web. I am a member of a huge forum that is a one stop shop for just about all of it. Included is intense discussion with other members. No, I will not link here. My DMs are open.

Please do not judge. I am a straight male, a consenting adult who consumes softcore porn and hates the mainstream porn industry as a whole. OnlyFans puts the control of content creation strictly in the hands of the creators without influence of a corrupt and exploitive industry. And please do not lecture me about pirated content. I am also really into psychology, current events, and go down all sorts of rabbit holes and read obsessively about anything interesting.

I've seen the posts on r/PurplePillDebate about OnlyFans, and comments on other threads. I know the rise of OF is an interesting topic for young men because ANY woman can go on OnlyFans and create an account. My argument is that they are severely over estimating the amount of women doing explicit content. Of course they think women who were/are "sex workers" in some capacity, however minor, are unsuitable mates.

I have some great news for you all. You can stop hyperventilating. Put away the porn for a day and go touch grass.

First some facts about OF:

  • Over 170 million users have registered an OnlyFans account, including 1.5 million creators.
  • An additional 500,000 new users sign up to the OnlyFans per day.
  • The OnlyFans platform grows at a rate of 70% per month!
  • In total, OnlyFans pays out over $5 billion to its collective of content creators each year.
  • Bella Thorne made over $1million in her first 24 hours of having an account.
  • The average age of paid subscription members is 35-44.
  • The average OnlyFans content creator only has 21 subscribers.

So on the surface it sounds like every 18 year old American girl turned into an online prostitute when they were bored during the pandemic. Absolutely not the case. You can go your whole life and NEVER cross paths with a woman who had an OnlyFans.

For our purposes, we will use the Wiki definition of sex work:

Sex work is "the exchange of sexual services, performances, or products for material compensation. It includes activities of direct physical contact between buyers and sellers as well as indirect sexual stimulation."

I will outline the variety of content actually on there. No, I cannot give percentages. You'll have to think about that yourself.

So first of all, we have a very American centric view of the world. In all sorts of aspects we think we are the only country that exists. I surmise some of the men here panicking about OF forget that the world is huge and if I had to guess the MAJORITY of women content creators aren't even from the US. But... many cosplay as American because OF has a huge American male audience. How do I say it.. these women shouldn't even be on your radar? Yeah, they aren't even in your dating pool or family or circle of friends.

I will admit though that the consensus is that OF is smut.

But, there are a TON of benign pages on there that you shouldn't worry about. You can make a page for free and there is all sorts of random content. There are joke pages. I've seen a politician with a page. I ran across a page of a guy tracking his weight loss journey. I saw one by a women who basically used it as an extension of Facebook. Granted, this isn't a huge percentage of the pages.

You straight men can also throw out the men in your total too. I believe that's around 15% of the accounts.

Fuck.... there are pages that are empty. There are "parked" pages for future content that never comes. There are girls who were fucking around with nothing to do over the course of the pandemic who posted 5 pictures. Remember, when OF started it wasn't necessarily for sex work. In fact, at one point they were going to exclude nudity altogether, let alone full blown sex work.

There is also a HUGE middle ground too. This includes:

- Instagram "e-thot" crossovers: People that are basically monetizing their Instagram pictures. PG-13. Many are honest about what they provide. Some are scammers who pretend like you get to see them naked, and you never will. They have misleading titles in their PPV.

- Patreon crossovers. A HUGE category of this is cosplayers monetizing the same damn shit they have on Patreon. I will grant you that some include some "lewd" but not nude content. Same misleading titles in PPV.

- TikTok crossovers. Same shit but without a TikTok watermark with some selfies thrown in

- Reddit crossovers. r/gonewild people who were posting headless nudes way before OF even came along

- Youtubers and streamers with PG-13 content.

- Youtube ASMR crossovers

- Celebrities

To me, these pages aren't really nefarious, and the women producing them come as advertised, they were social media attention-seekers BEFORE OF and they will be after. To the average straight man these women were never on your radar anyways. And they aren't even nude on the internet. Their already-existing social media was just a pipeline to OF.

They aren't producing porn and they aren't sex workers. Men just think they are because they masturbate to them. Just like men masturbate to womens' Insta pages. The biggest reason to "stay away" is because they are ATTENTION SEEKING and glued to their phones!!

NOW.... women from this category do sometimes escalate to "harder" content but they simply aren't the college Freshman women in your dorm. They already had some sort of following on another platform. As an example, you can see a ton of those r/gonewild ladies use huge dildos

As a sidenote: r/PurplePillDebate is a cis male/cis female centric subreddit. It may be easily forgotten that there is a lot of LGBTQ+ content as well.

The next category is easy, it's people who were already sex workers. Cam girls from the former Soviet states (lol), escorts, women in porn, erotic dancers, etc etc you get the point. OF is just another way to monetize the garbage they already did.

Oh, almost forgot the Pornhub Amateur crossovers. Same ol' shit, different platform.

As a side note, some content creators have managed accounts by some half-baked "management team." If their account is managed, there is a dude behind the computer answering the DMs and they follow a more traditional porn company model. While SO MANY content producers are already in committed relationships and perform sexual acts with a partner, the women sucked into having a managed account perform with a stunt cock- one of the dudes in the "management team," male pornstar, or another content creator.

So the debate is, should young men worry about an increasing number of young women on OnlyFans, or is it a moral panic?
