Very normal. If you have a dog and smack it in the head every day it won't trust you either. That's what your wife did to you. It'll take you having a good woman who consistently treats you well to undo that damage. But, don't count on it. They aren't that patient.

I picked up my dog from the shelter with the same hesitant skittishness. It took me months of constant love to gain his trust. But, don't expect a woman to be understanding and loving like that.

Your reaction is completely normal! It's actually a long recovery process. Unlike women men take longer to learn trust. The main difference is that women can jump right back into the game because they never trust in the first place.
