Just looking for some pointers about what I should be doing to protect myself amidst this implosion of everything

Been on and off with the ex for years but finally enough is enough and we're separating, selling the family home and moving on with our lives.

I know I should get a solicitor (seen it all before for everyone online and always shout get a solicitor get a solicitor but here I am without one) so just wondering where to begin? Feels underhanded to go get one, but I know she's already started down the path of protecting herself at all costs so need to be sensible and do the same.

Not married but been together 13 years, joint mortgage for 7 years, no pre agreement for who gets what out of the property, essentially both put in the same when we took out the mortgage. I lease a car, she owns hers.

Where do I begin with solicitors? What sort of questions should I be asking? It all seems so obvious from the outside, but being in it all... I just draw blanks haha cheers!
