If you are unable to work, then you can and probably should receive disability benefits. If, however, you are capable of working, then just do that. You can receive welfare benefits in the meantime. Imagine that your spouse asks you for a divorce. You get down on your hands and knees and beg your spouse not to divorce you. You make every promise you possibly can to change and improve the marriage, but your pleas fall on deaf ears.

In this situation, if your spouse has to receive government benefits in order to make ends meet, you will have to support your ex-spouse through your tax dollars. However, every tax paying citizen will have as much financial responsibility to your ex-spouse as you do. This makes logical sense, as every tax paying citizen had as much say in the decision to end the marriage as you did.

Most people have friends or relatives with whom they can stay. Those who do not ought to hold down a job.

Imagine that you get a divorce and you are the lower earner. Now imagine that, after the divorce, your sister and brother-in-law let you live with them. You do not have rent and bills. In that situation, you should not need alimony to meet your basic needs, yet the current system would still allow you to take your ex-spouse to court and demand alimony. The vast majority of people have the option to stay with a relative until they achieve financial independence. The few people who do not have the option of staying with a friend or relative should not quit working. They should instead be holding down a job the best they can.
