The answer you didn't know you needed!
You see, when I was about 11 years old, I made a very big change in my life. I was removed from a culture and inserted into another.
In america, we don't hug and kiss people, we used to wave hello from afar.
But in South america, we hug, we kiss cheeks, we give big long loving hugs with the people we like and admire.
This was very wierd to adapt to, as I was an 11 year old american boy now living in a totally different culture and having to adapt to this new way of interacting with humans.
19 years later and I now understand why we have this custom. It's becuse time is short, life passes you by and we prefer to have more moments of connection with each other than to waste our time with pleasantaries. We like to show people how special they are, sometimes not with words, but with actions.

If she gave him a hug after rejection, she likely saw him as sad and nonthreatening. Sort of the “sorry you are pathetic hug”. That’s why he needs to think about what happened and don’t come across like that in future. I don’t say it to be mean to the guy but we all know she thought “damn this guy is so pathetic he needs a hug so he doesn’t jump off a bridge” if she asked to give it to him.
