You need hella lot confidence for that. You'll first have to master approaching girls that are alone by themselves, but literally master it to seem like a walk in the park.

If you approach groups only with the intention of hitting on one girl in the group, they will sense that and usually try to shut you down. If you approach a group because you want to be social and make their day by cracking a joke or something, then you have a much higher chance of being accepted into the group. When it comes to groups your goal should just be to be social. If a girl in the group is interested great, if not, you just made new friends. You have to think about it like this: Be social first. Being social is like planting seeds. Some women you interact with will take a liking to you. Those seeds will grow and you can harvest them later. But don't go over-watering your seeds early on when you don't know which seeds will turn into something..most seeds fail..don't be so desperate to get with that ONE girl in that ONE group. It's a turn-off. Be social with as many people as you can. Make poeple laugh and smile. Harvest the seeds that you see blossoming into attraction later on. You approach a group to give something to them. Give first and you will receive later. Don't try to take your "gift" before you've given anything. So make them laugh or feel good first. That's your only goal to begin with

I've only done the group on group approach. Like if I was with a group of guy friends and we approached a group of girls.

Other than that I remember being out with a group of friends - guys and girls and this one random guy approached us.

He had good energy. He was friendly and confident. Wasn't intrusive at all. He just walked up introduced himself and started talking with everyone. He actually because friends with most of the people in the group and dated the hot chick of the group that all of us were to scared to make a move on.

He'd obviously done that before. It takes practice. Learned a lot from watching him socialize.

There are 2 schools of thought regarding approaching groups:

Open the group and befriend them. Then hit on the girl after the group has accepted you. This is old school mystery method.
Open the girl, but quickly acknowledge the friends. Spend as little time as possible interacting with the friends (if you're really trying to make it happen with the girl), but introduce yourself. Then quickly refer back to the girl. Your fundamentals probably need to be on point so you don't get blown out by the group.

Best thing is to try starting conversations with groups, just be social and say whatever comes to mind. The skill is in improvising conversation based on their response. Over time you will get good at it. Different groups have different people, personalities, different venues, etc... So, its best to practice and learn to calibrate to the group after the open.
