There's a saying: "If it's something you're afraid of, it's something you need to do." I would say approaching no matter what is good. Then stay and do your game so you can get feedback in how you do. And then how she does is feedback. Then recalibrate for next one.

I think approaching from desire is always good. But you have to have "comfort" - she has to be able to feel safe in accepting that desire (this all happens subconsciously). But you have to demonstrate desire first (and this is what I'm working on myself - making sure she knows it's man to woman, not person to person).

To answer your question, I heard a theory that in the past, there was a high risk of getting hit in the head if you approached a woman that was taken. Since attractive woman seem to be taken, overtime it instilled fear in human males to approach that woman. Not sure how true this is, but it seems to make sense why we have approach anxiety / approach fear.
