I think it's the caveman brain tbh. When you like a woman you get the urge to show off and do stupid shit that might (probably won't) impress her because your instincts are telling you to prove that you're the best man around.

I'd say its a vain attempt to reinforce your own ego. Women care alot more for if you care about them than they do about who you are.
