I hear it almost every day.

"Too much muscle mass is unattractive". Now, for me being a guy with an average height, it could be true that getting too big ruins aesthetics.

I tried to dig deeper into it.

It's true that an aesthetic physique is more pleasing to the eye, but evolutionary talking the biggest caveman had more chances to kill the "aesthetic" caveman, and rape his woman. Or am I wrong here?

What I'm trying to understand is, would women really prefer a lean guy instead of a big strong guy? Or are they saying it because it underlies something that could harm their ego? like the incapability to get such guy to fuck them because their value is probably too low?

Is there any real psychological research about all this stuff?

edit: I know "watch their actions, not their words". But what I wanted to know if there was a real research done about all this stuff. All I've found is that women prefer buff dudes for short-term dating and lean guys for long-term dating. So basically they cheat on the buff dudes while being in a relatioship with the lean guy. Nothing new here.
