A little background, I am 30 and recently moved to Canada from India. I was never exposed to such social environment before. I had a rough childhood experience, this had left effects on my personality.
Usually it's easy to start the conversation for me with both males and females. I like few topics which I can talk and discuss about for a long time but those are very science specific. On other topics I start good but I can't keep up as the conversation gets long. I guess it's not about the topic it's more to how can I be interesting at the moment.
This is what happened today at a bar:
I ordered a drink and after getting my drink I started looking for girls to talk. I had this idea in my mind that I should not think much about which girl I should talk to and which not. Then went to 2 girls sitting together and said "Hi", one of the girl did say hi back but not smiled and kept talking to her friend. Then 2 more girls joined the group and now not all were talking, one of them were standing idle in front of me. I said "Hi" and asked "How is your night coming along", she replied and we started talking. I asked random stuff like what you do and have you been to the club to dance. She did answer all my questions but didn't seemed excited. She introduced me to her friend and said she likes black guys, I tried to joke saying I am shade of black. Well then there was sudden awkward silence, and I could not add much to the conversation. The girl left me to order the drinks and I moved on as well.
From this experience , I feel like I could be more engaging at that moment. This also happens when I am talking to males. I start and talk for a bit and then I become dead turkey.
What should help me break this cycle?
