Where does this wit show through in your life? Also, what kind of humor or wit do you use?

I used to have this problem. Last night I was asked for the second evening in a row if I was a stand up comedian. If you give me a little more info on your game I'll see how I dealt with it is applicable to you.

I sometimes have the same problem. What you have to recognize, however, is that wit is often highly contextualized - more so than situational responses. A witty remark may only apply to a given statement or movement. So they can be used as fillers or placeholders. They don't translate to resolutions for situational issues because they aren't meant for that, and thus can't be used as a replacement for situations requiring bar/club talk.

When it comes down to any conversation - regardless of the point or intended outcome, you've got to have stories or "shareable" life experiences. Layering them will do wonders. For example, there was this one time I went to a club here in Indianapolis called the Cazba (I don't know if the spelling is right). It's this Jamaican club that specializes in Dancehall music. I was invited by this girl from a "Religions of the African Diaspora" class; she wanted to get to know me better. And I'm a class clown in a way, I can pop off funny things basically whenever, but when you have to talk to someone, it demands a different skill-set.

Fortunately, she wasn't really the quiet type. And she was talking and had mentioned a trip to Mississippi or some place in the South. And I interjected, and told her this story about this time when I was in Mississippi visiting my younger cousins. I was visiting some cousins - and this was a few years ago - and we decided to take a walk. During this walk, we had come upon this older lady who was about to take her dog for a walk. But it started getting rowdy and looked like it was about to attack us.

At this point, I asked her to ask me if I was scared. She asked. That's when the witty comment comes in: I was, like, "that's a stupid question" and gave her one of those "that's obvious" kind of look while saying it. So I return to the story and let her know that the older woman loses control of the dog and it starts running up to me and my younger cousins. I put my cousins on my shoulders and start to sprint to the nearest car and put them on its top. Fortunately the dog hadn't reached yet, so I was able to jump on top of the car as well, and kick it in its throat right when it tried to jump up and bite one of us. I saved the day.

I then asked her if she had any stories of incredible bravery. She didn't. So I made fun of her a little bit, and then we went to dance - which doesn't demand a lot of conversation. But, witty comments can be used as openers.

I'm intrigued myself. I have noticed the same problem.

My problem I've noticed is I suffer from situational confidence. The job I have requires me to interact with people constantly. I'm always witty and charming and, fuck-it-all, I've had girls give me numbers after just a few minutes. I'm boss at my job. I can get anyone to smile, tease anyone, touch anyone and it's awesome. I'm the pinnacle of social interaction at work.

But it's only at work. I'm assuming a role at work and have 0.01% outcome dependence. The only outcome I worry about is whether or not what I'm about to do or say will get me fired. And I've done some wild shit that would get normal food service employees written up at best, fired at worst. My role is the funny, awesome, in-charge alpha boss. I run that shit.

Outside of work I fall flat on my face. I can't think of things to talk about. I have trouble looking people in the eye. I'll run out of conversational topics.

It's so strange because I neg HB8's and HB9's at work everyday, even when they have their boyfriends right there. I'm a vicious flirt at work. I'm just thinking, 'Fuck it. I'm never seeing this chick or her douchebag b/f ever again. Might as well get my jabs in now and make the dick jealous.' These girls eat it up. It's crazy.

But I can't transfer that confidence. There's no crossover from work to the bar or a house party. Zero crossover and I want to make it work.
