I don't know much about France (other than a few French girls I've hooked up with), but good game is good game anywhere.
Put yourself out there - don't waste time in your room studying. Make the best of your time studying abroad (I studied abroad when I was your age and it completely changed the course of my life). Make tons of friends, try new things, go OUT a lot. Join some clubs, drink good wine and have fun.
Don't focus on getting laid. Focus on having the time of your life. The women will follow.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't plan on studying much, I want to experience as much as possible. I'm trying not to focus on hooking up too much because I don't want to be disappointed but I've hit a big dry spell recently and so it's been on my mind a lot. Whether I'm hooking up or not I at least know the scenery will be great ;)

This is super relevant to my interests. 21 year old American student spending a semester in France starting this Thursday. Though, I don't speak French.
I had two friends study in France the past two years. They both said its incredibly hard to hook up with French girls. Apparently they want almost nothing to do with Americans.

Say your canadian?
Although I'm american by birth I'm Indian-Persian heritage. I used to tell them I'm American and I thought it kinda made them more interested. I think it's probably because of me not being the typical white American?

I didn't even use my underwhelming grasp of French when I studied near Versailles. I initially tried, but fellow youth (especially girls) were more interested in speaking/practicing English with me.
Girls tend to be easier when you're abroad due to the stranger in a strange land phenomenon no matter where you are. You tend to be more adventurous and take more social risks. Also, international students are already pre-qualified to be cool, so you're mingling with a cool crowd that's generally open-minded and hungry to explore.
Can't think of anything that stood out about French girls, in particular. As I said to another person in this thread, a cool foreign guy with personality is always exotic. Nationality just seems to change the low-hanging conversational fruit. I think French youth have maybe a little more of a critic's sentiment of America, but that really just translates into an increased frequency of fun convos about misconceptions. Some people seem to expect you to have a persecution complex and unconditionally defend the American government while ripping off your shirt to expose your sweet American Eagle tattoo that's holding a tattered, war-torn American flag with the words "Cuz Freedom Aint Free" spelled out in bullet holes across your clavicle, but they immediately lose interest when they find out that you break their view of the world.
Being an American abroad is really easy. Everyone already consumes a bunch of American culture, so you're really easy for them to talk to. The night I moved in to my dorm in Prague, my French roommate and I were having a smoke on the balcony. The first topic of conversation? Neil Strauss' The Game (He asked me if I'd read it).

Hey,
Montpellier is a southern-France student city so you as far as weather and target pool are concerned you should be ok. You say you speak fluent French, how is that ? If you have the English/American accent I'm pretty sure it DOES have some effect on girls so that gives you some bonus. Many Americans are a bit too proud of their country in a way, so it's obviously OK to tell stories about your state/country but try not to sound tooooo cocky :) If you need an opener : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4ZO2FD4pNA all of his videos are hilarious and done in Montpellier as he's from here. He's pretty well known in France i would say.

Hahaha, this guy's hilarious. I learned French when I was a kid, and I could speak like a native when I was in 5th grade. I didn't use it for a long time but I took some classes recently just to brush up. I have good pronunciation but even I can tell I speak it with an American accent. My vocabulary isn't what it used to be, so I hope I don't forget words at a crucial moment.

Hi, New Zealander living in southern France for the last 2 years. Don't be overly keen, they can take a lot of work. That being said, there's some quite good clubs around which can be awesome pull spots, and you don't have to think about girls recognizing your game. I've seen very little solid game around, and a lot of AFC behavior, so even with moderate game you should be ok. Also, in montpellier there is a lot of non-french students, i had my first f-close there with a sweedish girl.

Great post.
Learn some french(try downloading some pimsleur) this would get you enough language skills to get you to speak basic stuff very quickly
be 'playfull' and enjoy. Don't do anything awkward most french girls like chilled guys that know the right way to tease a women.

Being French I can assure that if you think of French women as easy-laid sluts, you won't be guetting any.
The fact that you are in good shape and speaking French is a good plus though. To us, an American isn't really exotic nor charming, but speaking French can solve the "charming" problem.
You'll have to go to the girls rather than expecting them to come at you just because you are American. If you focus on talking to girls only, you'll miss plenty of them. Remember that guys know girls.
I might have got it wrong, but the title of your message is screaming "OK I'M AMERICAN, HOW DO I GET THOZ FRENCH BITCHES ? HEARD THEY'RE SLUTS !" If that's the way you're thinking, you don't stand a chance.
Good luck if you're a good guy.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply anything about French women. I would have used the same title regardless of where I was going (How do I get laid in Sweden, Ireland, Kentucky, etc.) Good point about meeting girls through guys, hadn't really thought of that

Don't worry about it. I recommend focusing on places where the students are. They're the same age as you, eager to meet new people, and have a lot of free time.
Since you're planning on staying for a long time, try making friends before looking for a one night stand. Montpellier isn't a huge city, you don't want to have a bad reputation in the few places where students go. And being with a group of friends does help with that.
Oh, and there's no such thing as saying "it's a date" in France. By that I mean that if a guy invites a girl to dance/eat/have a drink, it's pretty much implied that it is a date. So if the girl accepts, it's a good sign.

A cool, foreign male with personality is always exotic.
Only thing I can say felt different about approaching girls in Portugal, Barcelona, and France compared to other countries is that there's a bit more of a critic's sentiment when it comes to America. And, unless you have a persecution complex, it just translates into fun conversations about misconceptions and more serious conversations about the US government. The latter ending up in mutual agreement, anyways.

go out, have fun. meet a lot of people, hang out with them. be fun and social.
as long as you do the above... you'll get laid anywhere

I spend 4-6 months of the year on the road, and have recently written about my advice on finding sex on the road. It's more focused on when you're moving around regularly (I change cities every week or two), but you might find it useful.
Good luck!
