Spray some Febreze on the mattress.

doused it in febreze.. definitely better, just a hint remains. also rubbed it down with drier sheets and left a few under the sheets... slowly improving

I was surprised at how effective Febreze is. It doesn't just cover up the smell, it seems to neutralize it somehow.
If this doesn't work, you could rent a steam carpet cleaner with an attachment for cleaning upholstery, or call a company that does it.
BTW, do you have a mattress pad? One of those things that goes between the sheets and the mattress. If not, get one.

try /r/sex? pickup is outcome independent, right? that is an outcome, independent of pickup.
i'd suggest getting a waterproof bed cover to go under your sheets. those are necessary in places where it's so hot that you sweat at night.

Buy a matrass protective cover. It should be water proof and goes under the normal cloth matrass cover. You can wash it with the rest and your matrass stays clean.

If possible, leave your mattress out in the sun for a bit. Sunlight will destroy almost all odors, especially organic ones
