I don't think the tip should be, "be chivalrous because you're awesome", rather it should be "be chivalrous because you care". Demonstrating that you are concerned about the well being of somebody else, without being smothering, will be perceived as you being at least a decent human being and possibly even awesome.

Agreed. Being awesome is the result of caring about other people. Taking that extra step to do something for others.
