What do you do to get out of your own head?

Be mindful. This does not mean focusing on your mental activities, quite the opposite. It means freeing your mind of that inner dialogue, and focusing on observing the details of your environment and the events around you.

Let's do a little exercise in mindfulness right now. Let's take a drink of water. Seriously, let's take this simple act and make it mindful. I'm thirsty. I sit calmly and clear my mind for a moment, and focus on the sensations in my throat and mouth. My throat is dry and uncomfortable. I have a bottle of water here, I'll take a sip and hold it in my mouth. Mmm. Now I can feel the water as it flows in, and how it fills my mouth. I can feel the sensation of it swishing against the sides of my mouth. I can feel how the water is soothing the dry tissues of my mouth, and how much better they feel being hydrated. I swallow the water, and I can feel it flowing into my throat, and I can feel the increase in pressure in my stomach as it fills.

Okay, that was about the simplest pleasure you can have. For that few moments I was focusing on a sip of water, I wasn't conscious of all the mental chatter, about my job, my life, etc. I just focused on the sensations I was experiencing. And how many times have you slugged down a gulp of water without even thinking about it? Without even feeling it?

Ok let's transfer that mindfulness to a scenario in the real world. Let's say you're at a bar or a party. Take a moment to look around you and notice your surroundings, and the people in it. Just observe them, what they're wearing, how they look, and focus on the small details. Observe what colors they're wearing, how their collars look, how the clothes move down their torso, and what kind of shoes they're wearing. Look at any jewelry and what colors and shapes it has.

If you're doing this mindfully, you aren't thinking about how you're reacting to these observations. You don't attach any value to these observations, you're not looking to judge whether they're attractive people, you're just looking at what they ARE. You don't react to those observations, like this person is pretty, that person is fat, or whatever. You're just observing. You are focusing on the moment, on what is happening at that moment.

If you can take your focus into the here and now, you are being mindful. You can engage in the moment, without distractions. Generally people are preoccupied with the way they think things should turn out, the way they think people should behave, how they should behave or react, etc. People focus on the past or expectations of the future, which takes them totally out of the moment. They are incapable of experiencing what is happening right in front of them, because they're focused on the past or future, the very things that are NOT happening right in front of them. These thoughts distract you from the real events happening right now, and prevent you from interacting authentically with people. Get that stuff out of your head by focusing mindfully on the moment.

Go outside around 10:00pmish. Grab a comfortable chair or anything comfortable. Sit and close your eyes. Focus on all the sounds of the environment, the wind in your hair, how the palm of your hands rest on your knees, and those 3 gun shots to the left. Do this for 5min a day. You will notice how the world slowly becomes full rather than a pattern or rhythm. This will help you stay "out of your head" when your trying to "stay in the zone".

Start talking about playful funny things. Really gets me out of analytically mode.

Another way to get into the social interactions around you is to ask people questions you're actually interested in. Since you're analytically, you're naturally curious so I'm sure there are some quirky things you can ask people that you're actually interested in.
