You should research some highly reviewed ones on Yelp and visit them by yourself on a free weeknight. That way you'll get a lay for the place and see if it's somewhere you'd want to bring someone. There's nothing wrong with going somewhere solo and it'll bring you out of your comfort zone. Also there are bar seatings for this reason
Why wouldn't it? Don't over think things
A bar/gastropub are always good options

You can set a plan. There is no reason to stick to the plan, as long as you are leading it somewhere.

I will agree with freshairr about checking some site like Yelp. My dad came to town and I just picked a restaurant on Yelp that was near his hotel and got good reviews and wasn't ultra-expensive. It turned out to be one of the best restaurants in town.

So it's ok to lead a plan based on a review site. There are plenty of them. You can say "I heard good things about this place, we should check it out." And maybe have a backup plan. Even if the place you picked is good, it doesn't hurt to bounce to a new place, just for a change of pace.
