Your reason for spinning plates is not everyones reason for spinning plates.

I think practically every single specific behavior can probably be traced to someone using it as a coping mechanism. Hell some people wash their hands too much as a coping mechanism.

I think there are plenty of people who know how to be in an awesome relationship and choose to date multiple women as a lifestyle choice.

If YOU think you don't know how do be in a relationship, AND you want that knowledge, then you should try it out and gain that skillset.

However to try and decry an entire lifestyle choice as one thing or another is pretty immature, imho :)

Call it blue pill thought if you want to, but I'm getting older and realizing that I literally don't know how to be in a relationship. So what do you think? I'd be interested to hear seddit's take on it. You guys usually have a good head about this kind of thing.

A lot of spots have already been hit on this subject but this talk by James Marshall actually presents an awesome take on the philosophy one could take towards multiple relationships. The idea being that good boundaries are key (you shouldn't be acting like the BF with multiple girls) and multiple relationships is a potentially more advantageous precursor to entering into a serious relationship. (As opposed to what people usually do, which is to fall into a serious relationship with the first person they have a connection with.)

It might be more than just a defense mechanism, because what it does is guarantees you having and keeping your edge. Unless you can find another way to do that, you don't have a choice.

I dated around quite a bit in the past year until recently. I was seeing two girls at the same time for most of it. I let them know up front that I was seeing other people. We maintained strictly physical relationships -- not to be confused with an open, committed relationship.

I could see nearly right away that each of these girls wasn't really what I wanted in a girlfriend. They were nice enough in their own way, but they didn't pair well with me. That didn't mean I didn't find them attractive, though. We could still meet and have fun, but it had to be strictly casual. They understood that and were okay with it.

Eventually, I met someone who I felt truly compatible with, so I stopped seeing other women. I'm in a committed, exclusive relationship with her. I think a big part of the reason I'm with her is because I dated around enough to know what I wanted and what wouldn't work for me.
