After wasting age 13-18 doing nothing but playing video games alone in my off time, at age 19 I have spent one year really working on my confidence and people skills in particular. The prospect of getting girls has been a good carrot to keep me motivated so far.
Nowadays I regularly reach out to meet new people: picked up a social hobby (rock climbing), organizing hang-outs, volunteering at a bar, traveling alone (hitchhiking). After one year of really practising, I can talk to strangers and arrange meet-ups pretty well. Problem is the part where you are supposed to really get to know people and connect.
There is a very clear repeating pattern: after a couple of times meeting, people seem to decide they better avoid me and make excuses all the time when I try to arrange something, or at most they try to keep me as a pushover to fix their computers. (I have proper boundaries so this doesn't take long)
And the question for you, seddit, is how do I go about figuring out what I'm doing wrong? Despite reading up on body language and subtle clues, the most I've been able to figure out is that people feel "uncomfortable" around me (someone literally told me). I have Aspergers, and aspies are well known for being oblivious to social clues.
One possible cause might be that I have a very nasty habit of trying to impress people. Despite having a life full of activities that I love doing in themselves, in these activities my brain often decides that it's time to demonstrate how good I am, and people really pick up on this. By focusing on the people around me instead of impressing them, this has gotten much better but it still occassionally happens...
I don't have close friends to ask for feedback, and despite regularly meeting people I don't see that happening anytime soon. So how do I figure out where to improve Seddit?
