Many bars will comp you a free drink on your 21st birthday, if you show your ID. Try going around to several bars. But I personally recommend not getting too drunk, especially if you're not an experienced drinker.

BTW, some bars will comp you a drink on any birthday. I tried it on my 53rd at one of my regular places. I had to talk them into it, and I got a shot of the worst rotgut whiskey I ever had. Oh well.

For clubs try to have high energy, it isn't the day time when everyone is calm and quiet.

Practice being incredibly comfortable in your body. This will translate visually. When I first started going to bars regularly (later in my 20s) I actually got the comment that "you don't come to bars much, do you?" from a bartender. I wasn't feeling comfortable, and she could tell!

Here's the actual technique. Credit for this goes to James Marshall. Just before you walk into the place, or anytime that you feel nervous energy start to spike, focus on the soles of your feet and the sensation you feel there. This actually helps ground you and makes you feel solid. Remember your purpose for going out - in my case it's have fun, be yourself, meet interesting people and see what you can create with them!

Edit: second the advice on not getting too drunk (or drunk at all, really). More than a couple drinks does not help your game. Practice sober and you will really learn how to control your state, no matter what!
