There are some clubs and bars about in town... can't really afford that.

Find a place with no-cover and drink water :)

If logistics completely won't work and you can't even do coffee shops or supermarkets and the like, then try online.

First, learn to afford it. Avoid places with cover charges, babysit one drink for two hours, etc. I don't know what prices are like there, but odds are you can find 10-20 quid in your budget somewhere.

Second, try cafes, preferably a place that's conducive to hanging out for an hour or two. So, not Starbucks, but a place where you can go and read, do school work, etc. Places with couches and large communal tables are best. You can't bounce around approaching like at a big club, but you at least put yourself out in public more instead of doing school work at home.

Third, how big is your school really? I doubt it's so small that you've run out of options there, so be more proactive in meeting people outside of your classes and existing social circle.

It sounds like your priorities should be:

Find a job - put most of your effort into this one
Start going out

I don't understand when people on here put down what they look like and then say their problem is something completely different. What does that have anything to do with you being 6ft tall?

How about meeting people in your classes? Clubs and extra curriculars? Through your volunteer position? Surely that involves being around other people right

Get involved in your community -- volunteer some place where people your age may also volunteer or be around. Helps the community out and gets you meeting people.

Join a recreation sport coed team, if such a thing is available. You may have to wait for this depending on the season and sport.

Go to libraries for your studies. Really, anywhere public where you can work and people might be around. You're going to study anyways, may as well do it around people.

Online is really worth looking into. You just talk a bit first, then arrange for a meeting.
