I glance around the room and make eye contact with a girl, I hold it, and she does so aswell. She cant handle the staredown and diverts her atttention down. Was this a good idea?

It's usually a good idea. Most of the time the woman will look down first, then look back up and smile, then you smile and everyone wins. If she keeps staring then pretend you're juggling invisible balls and throw one to her and see if she catches it. If not, well then, move on sonny.
