IIRC The pink side notes seemed to be parables that magnify the larger point Greene is making in the chapter. Try reading them if the chapters aren't making sense.

I've used the methodology in "The Art of Seduction" exactly once, and the success I found was immediate yet disconcerting. The HB 9.5 I landed even commented to me later that she didn't actually like me that much, but felt like she was hypnotized when she was with me. I can only attribute that to the unsettling methods Greene advocates. The book works, but not in a way that makes you feel good about yourself after, and the girl will realize at some point that she's been had. I think that's why Greene included chapters on how to mitigate what happens after you properly seduce your victim.

I first read The 48 Laws of Power before Art of Sed. and the book is structured in the exact same way. I found it to be a very insightful way to provide additional supporting information to the theories being discussed.

That being said, I would only read some of the sidebars. I had faith in what was being discussed in the content of the book and so, for me, the supporting examples were not necessary.
