I'm 23, in college and fairly involved in two co-ed student groups around campus. I know quite a few people and its hard for me to go to a place or a party and not know a ton of people. But despite being social, I haven't had a steady (more than a month long) thing with a cute, fun girl in over 2 years even though I'm meeting lots of girls.

I have a couple friends who are great with girls. It seems everytime I see them, they are with an awesome girl, or have a couple of cool girls that they are talking to.

Me on the other hand go through year long dry spells where I'm not talking to any girls at all, or I'm only talking to a girl I'm not interested in because I have no other options.

There have been times in the past when I meet a cute girl I'm really interested in. I'll see her a couple times, then if I start inviting her out and she always has excuses or something going on, I'm quick to assume she isn't interested at all and I stop texting her completely. But when I move on, its not like I start talking to a new girl, I just go back to being alone.

My friends have been telling me that with a girl I'm actually interested in, I need to be trying harder and not giving up right away. But my reasoning is that if she always has excuses or can't hang out one week, then she isn't interested, so why bother?

I always see advice about just move on or go to the next girl, but I am starting to think this is bad advice and makes me give up at the slightest hint of disinterest.

Any advice from knowing when to keep pursuing and when to just move on and give up
