Fraternities and their advantages/disadvantages?

It depends on how big greek life is at your university. If you went to a big university like FSU, UF, etc Greek life is a big part of the college culture. Fucking do it, if this is the case!

If you are going to a small university then don't even bother going greek (in my opinion.) An easy way to spot a small university with poor greek life is a campus without greek housing or most of the students are commuters.

Okay, carrying on. A bit about myself. Im a senior and i'm about to graduate. I rushed freshmen year, Fall with a pretty big fraternity that is very abundant on most campuses. However, My campus was a small university with a majority of commuters as students. this means

no greek housing
poor college culture

I ended up becoming a brother in a fraternity but went "inactive" (basically I quit) a semester after I crossed and got taste of the greek culture at my university. It simply wasn't for me.

With that said, Would I do things differently? No. I love my pledging experience. Yeah we got hazed but it wasn't anything ridiculous. Just brothers trying to create an environments for you and your pledge brothers to bond and share hilarious stories and memories. I still talk to my pledge brothers despite dropping the fraternity. We share awesome stories of us pledging together and we will always share that commonality, which is nice.

Here are my pros and cons of greek life at a big university

PROS: You will network like crazy. Fraternities and Sororities have "socials" where your frat and their sorority will get together to just hang out. this is a huge opening and if you're a freshmen, it'll be stupid easy to make friends and connections super fast. As a freshmen, everyone wants to meet people. Take advantage of this because as the years go by, people develop "groups" and tend to maintain it. You will meet some cool guys and girls this way.

"easy girls". As a freshmen you will meet other freshmen. There is a stereotype of freshmen girls being easy. This is because typically a freshmen will have very little experience with guys. some are sheltered and therefore when the come to college they experience freedom and a lot of attention from guys, they pounce on them. but most freshmen guys are going to be too shy to make a move. don't be this guy. capitalize on the girls that want experiences and fun. Be that guy that they experiment with and have fun with!

CONS: It costs money. Different fees will apply depending on if you live in the greek house or if you're just paying membership dues. mine were about $500 a semester.

Shitty fucking brothers. Every fraternity is different. Mine had a ton of brothers so naturally we had some cool ass guys to meet. Then there were the "other guys" who were fucking douchebags. Scumbag greg type of guys. My fraternity initiated them because we wanted a high recruitment rate and membership fees to pay for socials, etc.

Mandatory events. You will have fundraising and volunteer work. this is mandatory for your fraternity. However, this could also be considered a pro if you are with an event/volunteering with sororities. Sometimes though it will be just you and your brothers doing work.

Though reddit is very anti-fraternities, they are a definite plus for getting laid. This is very dependent on the popularity of said frat, that is. I'd always say join, however there a couple things to know.

If you join, live in the house where all the things happen (that is if you don't mind tripping over garbage in the morning)

You will only get laid as much as you try. It's not an automatic. Some of my brothers are man whores, and a select few practically swat it away with a stick.

Honestly, I cannot give many cons other than dealing with the nationals, and the love/hate relationship with your schools administration.

Join the one that fits you best, and it will augment the next 4ish years of your life. Good luck man.
