TL;DR: Mindset means alot! Basically, try to figure out something personal about the girl without asking her directly.

I've been running boot camps in daygame locations with a bunch of guys who are new to this type of stuff. We're currently working on fixing your mindset before the approach, and I came up with something that's increased their sticking and success rate pretty significantly. Before the approach, I give them a task, usually along the lines of "find out what her favorite food is without directly asking her". This has worked much better than "go get her number" and I think I've figured out why.

Firstly, they enter the set with a mindset of finding out something personal about the girl, not just gettin into the set and # closing.

Secondly, it forces them to take control of the conversation. This displays more confidence, and he's also building rapport by trying to know her on a personal level. After they've accomplished their goal, they're usually so invested in the set that they either move to an instadate, or end up with a pretty solid # close (so far, only %20 flake rate on the # closes)

This also works for night game in terms of building sexual tension by changing it to something like "find out her bra size".

I find the more personal or challenging, the more rapport you build.
