How hardlined is the rule that guys always text first?

Not just the first time you text them. I've found that with women I've recently #-closed that the first text of the day needs to be from me or I won't hear from them. Now, if we texted earlier in the day, I'll get convo starters from them later in the day pretty regularly.

Hey you didn't get a lot of responses so I decided to chime in

I currently am playing the field but not really looking for anything. If I experienced something cool or interesting during my day that I'd like to share with a girl then I'll send her a short text about it and not really expect a response. I find that not expecting a response prevents me from glancing at my phone every 5 minutes hoping she'll reply. If I haven't heard from somebody in a while then I'll just text "hey" or "what's up". However usually I reserve texting for arranging dates and get togethers.

Most of the time I'm actually away from my phone in another room. My phone is on silent and I'm usually busy doing other tasks. I don't purposefully wait to respond to people; I legitimately am busy. To answer your question when I'm attached to my phone I find that I text people first a lot more. When I don't care about exchanging text messages then I receive a lot more "first texts" to the point where I am living a life where 90% of my text conversations are started by the other party.

If you asked for a strangers number and got it, you have to text first since they won't have yours. If you are talking about texting within a casual dating relationship where you know them then most people would say you only text first 25% of the time.

For me I text first maybe 10% of the time after that initial hook.
