Baby steps are good, but I think sometimes you should also throw yourself in the deep end to realize you won't sink. I was a shy kid, I still like to think of myself as somewhat shy even though anyone who knows me would dispute that. I was so shy I didn't even like to dance in front of my immediate family.

Long story short, I'm 12, it's my aunt's 50th birthday, dance floor's empty, I can tell my friend wants to go dance but he's just as scared as I am to go up there, so I say to him let's go together to make it easier. I turn around get out of my seat and walk up to the dance floor turn around and see my friend still in the seat. The whole party is basically looking at me, and I figure walking back to my seat is far more embarrassing than dancing so I dance. Everyone's cheering me on. I was on the dance floor the rest of the night. First light bulb moment for me that sometimes you just got to put yourself out there and the results are almost never what we fear them to be like.

Toss strangers a compliment with ZERO other intentions? Yes!!! Great for confidence and it flatters them too.

Ask people questions? Yes! People are so much more interested in talking about themselves or what they know than about anything else so this is very charming.

Work out (even just a bit in your bedroom?). Yes!! If you can at least get to the point where you won't feel embarrassed when asked to do normal things you get a huge confidence boost.
