Notice the eye contact. Doesn't work as well if either of you are looking away the whole time. THAT is an awkward silence.

Haven't seen that movie (yet) but I'm a big proponent of sexually charged silences. Also just as an aside: he wouldn't even have to look like Ryan Gosling, though it clearly helps. If a guy and I shared a moment like that and he got up and walked away I don't think I'd be able to handle myself. On that note, I can't figure out if it's good or bad that he left her hanging like that. Experiment with both and report back!
