Whats canned about it? It's one of the most natural ways to start a conversation ever. Perhaps its a little simple but it gets the job done.

I am just saying that openers are better or worse depending on who you are and what situation you are in. It's more natural if you learn to come up with things on the spot. The best thing to do I think is to comment on something in the environment because then it's relevant and it doesnt look like you are "opening", instead it just looks like youre a chatty fellow.

I mean one could look at the list for inspiration about things to say but I think that if you need inspiration then you're thinking too hard. I don't think I would ever use the "do you believe in magic" line because its just too irrelevant in most situations. It just gives away that I'm hitting on her. Thats not amazing because she'll just jump to conclusions.

The point is that natural is better because she'll suspect less, she might suspect it but its the deniability which makes it less threatening. Theres a place for making your intentions known, but its not on the outset.
