Sorry for the newbie question... As title says, I got asked in front of a group of people including the girl, what's the appropriate/best way to deal with this situation? She's my date but not gf-bf relationship yet.

Firstly, I'm just going to put this out there: This is an issue is one that mainly comes up when:

People are acquaintances. People who are closer to you, will be up on current events and wouldn't be creating a situation like this.
People are younger, more immature, less experienced. Like in their teens and early 20s. As people date more and experience more of the grey areas that dating can reside in.... they'll realize the potential awkwardness of posing this question, that way. All it takes is ONE time for someone to witness the awkwardness of two people jockeying for position as they figure out how to answer that question. And then people know the effect of the question, after which time, they're less likely to ask it, unless they're asshats. As people get older they'll be less likely to ask you in front of everyone, while you're standing next to each other. They'll tend to wait until everyone is socializing freely and the two of you are separated.

All this said, you can avoid this whole situation by either planning your dates at places where you won't run into acquaintances. And honestly, this shouldn't be an issue much past high school. The dating I did in college, always resided in that grey, undefined area. And not once did anyone ask that question of me while my date was standing next to me.

I kinda casually answered with "She's a friend." Did I screw up? After thinking about it afterward, I think I should have just ignore and redirect the topic.

You don't need to "deal" with it, as such. But you shouldn't ignore it either. And you definitely shouldn't come out with a try-hard response like, "I'm working on it." Something humorous and light would probably be best, because she might feel awkward too, and you'll be doing everyone a favor by relieving the social stress of the situation.

And if you handle your logistics well, you won't have to deal with this question at all.
