I have some pretty bad social anxiety. What are some ways I can get past it?

You have to force yourself to talk to random people. What you'll talk about doesn't have to be interesting, and it will probably be extremely awkward for you, but it will eventually get easier. You just have to remember you will probably never see this person again, and he/she will probably never think of you again. What helped me was playing truth or dare with my roommates and always picking dare, forcing me to do embarrassing stuff.

Meditation. Getting friends will still be your job, but it will dampen the effect anxiety has on you.

Also, look up David D. Burns on Amazon. He's a psychiatrist who was one of the first to use and popularize cognitive behavioral therapy, which among other things is used to treat anxiety, and he has written several books on the subject. His "Feeling Good: The new mood therapy" and "Feeling good handbook" are very good and informative, and I highly recommend reading them if you're struggling with social anxiety.

I've had it from about third grade until around 40 years old. What worked for me was medicationd, therapy, Toastmasters, and talking to store clerks, wait staff, and anyone else. I still have it to a degree. For instance, I can't get in front of a group of people and talk. But it's lightyears better than it was. Try out Toastmasters. I've seen a few people change dramatically.
