How can I start up a casual conversion with a girl at the gym, without making it obvious that I fancy her?

You don't. Because you do fancy her, so let's look at the options.

You don't talk to her

Maybe she talks to you or she doesn't. Either way you end up not shitting where you eat. Personally I say this because my gym is my Mecca.
You do talk to her, and you don't make it clear that you are interested.

Nothing really develops because you are not invested. She will undoubtably know you do like her but will not engage because you are too afraid to make the move. Ultimately, things just get awkward.
You do talk to her and DO make it known you like her.

Maybe it works out, maybe she shoots you down. At this point it a normal approach, just use the gym for an indirect opener. However, you feel better cause you went after it, regardless of if you succeed. If she does shoot you down just say, "Hey, all good, had to take the chance you know?" And then go about your work out. Smile when you see her going forward, but move on. Who knows? Maybe she notices gains you're making and re-engages later.

I would note that you took option 3, you can start casual in the conversation (woah, where did you get those sneakers?/ Hey, that core movement looks intense, what's it called? Hi, I'm [insert name]) but make it known you noticed. The longer you wait, the more you are just 'that creepy guy at the gym'.

I once asked a girl if it was fine to approach a girl at the gym, the answer was no. Girls feel gross at the gym, they're sweaty, insecure, and they think they smell. Plus they're usually surrounded by alpha males who are buff and huge which may make them more insecure.

With that said hey still gotta try, I'd just keep that in the back of your head is all. The best way is to make simple chat, don't ask her out, if you always see her, chat her up. Never tell her anything that's advice or about her form, if anything ask her for advice. What I'd do is Play stupid on an exercise she's doing, say hey what is that you're doing. Or hey how do you like that exercise, are you seeing benefits? I wanted to do it but I felt like I wasn't getting results, or say some shit like that. Then mix in some cocky funny stuff like, okay can you make sure you whipe down I feel like I've seen you before and the last thing we want in this gym are people like you leaving their germs everywhere, say it with a smile and walk to your exercise or whatever. Just keep it light and fun, stop putting pressure on yourself, cute girls often turn out to be complete tools. Judge her on her personality not her looks, you do that and you have a better chance to succeed.

The gym is a sacred place for some people. A lot of my friends that are girls go to the gym so that they can improve them; they do not want to get hit on. You can possibly still do it but tread carefully.

Don't do this, it's dishonest, and she'll be able to tell. You should make your intention clear. You don't need any excuse to talk to a girl. It takes way more balls to let her know you like her, girls prefer the honesty. It's the quickest way to for both of you to get what you want - think about, girls love sex, and love to meet guys who are down for it. It doesn't matter what you say. Maybe acknowledge it's a bit strange "Hi, I know this sounds strange, but I wanted to meet you". Or "Hi, my name is ___".

What if she rejects you? Good, you'll find out quickly and won't waste days of your life wondering stupid shit about this girl, and you'll learn something, so next time you'll be better. Take a risk.

I would say eather be situational "you bench a lot for a girl", "how long are you on the machine for?" ask her if she could help you bench if she is doing breast exercices as well, just say you noticed that that was what she was doing.

Or just say hello and ask how she is doing if you happen to work out close.

the opening is not important, you are overthinking it.

After the opening you need to build repore, ask some standard "boring" questions but focus on making statements on each anwser, tell some story or be a little cocky funny, dont forget strong eyecontact and dont be scard of moving close to her.

Since you are new you should not expect to get really anywhere serious whit her, just focus on improving your social skills with her and if you can make it happen with her, cool, if not that is cool to at least you went out of your comfortzone and improved. In the end that is more important.

It is dangerous focusing on just one cute girl, you want to be a man with a bigger plan and a fullfilling life and this girl is just someone you want to talk to, if she regects you you should not really care to much. Be social with everyone at the gym, it will make you come of as more attractive and as a social person with social value.
