Cute cashier here. I think being handed a number is a great way to do it. Smile and flirt with her, and if she is receptive hand it to her at the end. It also doesn't draw a lot of attention which is good when you're around other people and management.

First, assume she's probably seeing someone, and be prepared to continue on having a great life even if nothing comes of it.

Second, understand that people at work don't want to draw the attention of their supervisors or coworkers for flirting when they should be working, so you should try to be a little bit subtle.

But third, also understand that it's not particularly attractive to hide your attraction. I think sliding a number underneath the bill is a kinda weak move... and one she's probably seen more times than you might think.

Did you stand there in line silently, trying to be super respectful Nice Guy™? Or did you talk with her, build rapport, make some kind of connection?

Maybe build some rapport, identify some topic you have in common, and then ask her when she's getting off of work and if she'd be interested in grabbing a coffee afterward to continue talking about it. And whether she says yes or no, either way, ask for a pen, write down your number, and say, "well whenever you're free, let me know. I'd love to continue chatting with you."

Make it comfortable, natural, and not a big scene.
