Same boat man. I never had any close friends in the past but it's getting better the more I try. What I found to be helpful is first seek to understand then to be understood. Be interested in them first and try to understand them and then give them the opportunity to understand you.

Ask questions about them, ACTIVELY LISTEN, respond based off what they said, and then share something that's more about you.

I've actually had girls as friends be more dependable than the fellas I grew up with. Sharing intimate vulnerable things about yourself with each other is a big step for going from stranger to acquaintance, acquaintance to friends. Just know the exoression and feeling must be mutual.

I think close relationships are based on shared experiences. To take an extreme example, they say that soldiers who fought together have the strongest bonds because of what they went through together.

Maybe you could ask a friend from one of your clubs to do something in a non-club capacity? If you have a good time, ask them again etc. If not, try another friend. I think in this way you will foster greater closeness.
